Talon looked out across the burning landscape, analyzing the wind patterns with his master instincts. To the north, the sky was completely choked with falling black ash and toxic sulfur fumes. To the west, the main lava river flowed rapidly toward the riverbed, cutting off the ground escape route. The only open corridor lay to the southeast, across the vast Salt Flats toward the distant green mountain range of Emerald Ridge — a safe coastal sanctuary fifty miles away, rich in fish and protected by high limestone cliffs. However, reaching it meant leading the entire flock, including young fledglings who had never flown long distances, through a sky filled with smoke and turbulence.
"We must head southeast for Emerald Ridge," Talon declared firmly to the gathered colony. "We will fly in a low V-formation, staying below the main ash cloud where the air is cooler."
An older male Pteranodon named Kael stepped forward, shaking his grey head in doubt. "The fledglings cannot fly fifty miles, Talon!" Kael squawked. "They will tire and fall into the burning forest!"
"They will fly if we carry the draft for them," Talon answered, his amber eyes burning with unyielding determination. "I will lead the point position and break the wind turbulence. The mothers will fly on the flanks to support the young ones."
Before Kael could argue further, a massive explosion shook the cliff face behind them. A section of the upper ledge collapsed into the canyon below, consumed by a wave of falling volcanic slag. There was no more time to debate.
Talon gathered the entire colony onto the edge of the remaining cliff shelf. Forty-five Pteranodons stood ready, their wings spread and their eyes fixed on Talon. Below them, the lava river reached the base of the basalt pillars, filling the canyon with molten fire. The heat rising from the lava was scorching, threatening to singe their leather wings.
"Follow my flight line!" Talon commanded, taking the front position. "Mothers in the center with the fledglings! Stronger fliers on the outside edges to block the crosswinds!"
Talon launched off the cliff, his broad ten-meter wings catching a low thermal wave that carried him over the burning jungle. The flock followed immediately behind him, forming a tight, organized V-formation. Talon flew at the point, his powerful beats cutting through the turbulent crosswinds with effortless rhythm. Astra and the experienced mothers flew on the sides, protecting the young fledglings in the middle.
The sky around them was a terrifying shade of deep crimson and smoky black. Glowing coals drifted past their wings like burning rain. Below, the ancient forest of Ash Rift was turning into a sea of bright red flame. Giant fern trees fell into the lava, sending sparks shooting high into the air. Their primeval home was disappearing under a blanket of molten fire and ash.
"Keep flying!" Talon roared to his colony, his amber crest aligned with the southeastern horizon. "We will reach the Salt Flats soon!"
The forty-five Pteranodons glided smoothly over the burning valley, steady in their formation, leaving the disaster behind.
