When the assessment was complete, the raptor walked to a flat basalt shelf two meters to Marcus's left and sat. It looked at him with those amber-gold eyes. And did not leave.
"Talon," Marcus said quietly—the name arriving, as always, before the rational justification for it did.
The Deinonychus flicked one amber ear-feather. Above them, sixty meters up, Marcus heard his radio crackle with Reyes's voice: "Dr. Vance? You've been silent for forty minutes. Status?"
Marcus kept his eyes on Talon. "I found something," he said carefully into the radio.
"You need to come down. Both of you. Slowly. And Reyes—whatever the acoustic sensor reads on your way down, that's not a geological anomaly."
