Kael and Ignis spent two nights on the ash crag ledge before the fledgling's wing was stable enough for short glide tests. On the third morning, as Kael packed his survey kit and prepared to begin the careful descent back toward the Institute, something changed in the air. The wind died completely.
At four thousand meters altitude, on a morning that should have been bright and sharp with autumn sunshine, the sky above the Aethelgard Peaks turned the color of an old bruise—deep purple-gray, shot through with veins of icy blue light. Ignis's ember feathers flared to full intensity instantly, every plume blazing with living crimson fire!
The fledgling reared upright on his hindquarters, spreading his wings—damaged joint forgotten—and let out a piercing, resonant war cry that reverberated between the crags like a thunderclap!
SCREEEEEE-RAWWWWK! Kael's elemental amulet turned ice cold against his chest. He yanked it out and stared at it: the detection crystal had shifted from its usual warm amber to a deep, pulsing violet.
Shadow-class elemental detected. Category: Archon. Power scale: EXTREME.
"Frost Archon," Kael breathed.
He had read about Frost Archons in the Institute's restricted history archives. They were corrupted elemental lords—once great human elemental masters who had bargained with the Void for immortality, exchanging their solar warmth for absolute dominion over shadow and frost magic. The last confirmed Frost Archon—Voreth the Pale—had been sealed in the Permafrost Vault beneath the northern glacier three hundred years ago.
Had someone broken that seal? From the dark sky above, something descended. They came in formations—eight, then sixteen, then dozens: shadow-frost gargoyles, each one carved from living shadow and encased in crackling blue-white frost rune armor. Their wingspans were enormous, each creature roughly the size of a draft horse, their frozen mouths open to reveal jagged icicle teeth.
They were not diving toward the ash crags. They were diving toward the valley below—toward the village of Ember Falls, where Kael's research mentor, the scholar Master Veyra, lived. Toward the great granite monastery where three hundred students and faculty slept unaware.
"No!" Kael shouted!
Ignis didn't wait for a command. The gryphon fledgling launched from the ledge like an ember projectile, his glowing wings cutting through the purple-dark air! A frost gargoyle swooped directly at them!
CRACK! Ignis struck the gargoyle mid-dive with both talons, his ember feather temperature spiking to critical! The frost armor of the gargoyle shattered on contact, the creature exploding in a burst of shadow smoke and ice crystals!
Kael scrambled to Ignis's back as the gryphon circled above the crag, his mind racing. Below, in the valley, he could see the first blue-frost columns of shadow magic rising from the rooftops of Ember Falls. The frost gargoyle vanguard had reached the village.
"We have to warn Master Veyra!" Kael shouted over the roaring wind. "And we need to understand what broke the Permafrost Seal!"
Ignis dove toward the valley, his ember wings blazing trails of orange fire against the bruised violet sky—two against an army. The age of the Frost Archon had begun.
