The change came at half past five, and it came quickly.
The cloud layer that had been building over Pine Ridge since mid-afternoon compressed downward with a speed that experienced mountain weather watchers called a collapse — the moment when the atmospheric column above an orographic storm suddenly runs out of the energy that has been holding it aloft and lets its full weight fall toward the valley floor.
Thomas saw it from the hay barn where he was working and stopped what he was doing immediately. He stepped out to the yard and stood watching the ridge. The light had gone flat and grey. The temperature had dropped four degrees in the past twenty minutes.
He went to the workshop and turned on the weather radio.
The forecast for Pine Ridge and the surrounding foothills — which the morning's clear weather had made him delay listening to — was not good. A cold front that had stalled over the high mountain plateau for three days had broken unexpectedly to the south.
The valley system below Pine Ridge was in the direct path of the resulting precipitation. Six to nine centimeters of rainfall was forecast for the next twelve hours, with the majority arriving before midnight.
Thomas turned the radio off and stood for a moment in the workshop doorway.
Six centimeters was significant but manageable at this time of year. Nine centimeters, arriving in six hours, would push Willow Creek to its flood stage. The lower pasture, which sat only slightly above the creek's high-water mark, would flood. The animals would need to be moved to the upper pasture before dark.
He began the mental calculation: the foals, the mares, the ewes, the ram, Scout, the cattle from the lower meadow. The upper pasture gate, the connection to the track. He would need the four-wheeler and Scout working together to move the sheep efficiently in the fading light.
He reached for his work jacket on the peg by the door.
In the west pasture, Barnaby had already begun to move.
He had not heard the weather radio. He had not seen Thomas's face in the workshop doorway. What he had felt, beginning approximately forty minutes before the visible storm collapse, was a change in the deep ground resonance of the lower pasture that had no explanation in the day's normal weather pattern.
The aquifer — which he had learned over eleven years to read as a kind of slow, steady bass note — was doing something unusual. The signal was not louder or faster or more intense than normal. It was different in character. It had the quality of something shifting rather than something flowing. Like the difference between a river running and a reservoir turning.
Barnaby could not interpret this in technical terms. He knew it the way he knew ice on a board: not by name, but by feel. And what it felt like was wrong.
He moved to the center of the west pasture, placed his feet wide on the ground, and stood for two minutes with his head lowered and completely still, reading the valley through his hooves with every sensor at his disposal.
The signal was getting stronger. Not dramatically — not in any way that would break the surface of the normal afternoon — but steadily, progressively, in the direction that signals only went when something upstream was building pressure it would eventually release.
He raised his head, looked at the cloud over Pine Ridge, and began walking toward the stable.
Thomas checked the weather station mounted on the stable wall every afternoon at four.
The barometric pressure reading confirmed what he had already felt in the air: a steady, progressive drop that had been running since noon and showed no sign of leveling. The thermometer had fallen three degrees in two hours. These were not dramatic numbers individually, but together they described an atmospheric condition he recognized from experience.
He went inside and pulled up the regional weather service online. The forecast models had not yet updated for the afternoon cycle. He bookmarked the page and went back to his afternoon work.
At five, he checked again. The models had updated. He read the new data twice, then set his coffee mug down carefully on the desk.
The front that had been stalled over the plateau was moving. It was moving faster than the morning forecast had indicated, and it was moving directly toward the valley. The rainfall totals attached to a fast-moving cold front of this size, hitting a warm valley floor, were in the range that produced serious flash flood risk in the drainage system above Pine Ridge.
He walked outside and looked at the ridge. The cloud was not dramatic yet — but it was there, stacking up behind the treeline, grey-white and building.
He began thinking about the upper pasture.
