The Old Logging Dam failed at eight fifty-three in the evening.
Thomas learned about it from the county emergency alert system: a text message on his phone, brief and blunt. The dam had partially failed at the primary overflow spillway. Water was releasing into the main drainage channel at an elevated rate. Communities and properties in the lower valley were advised to monitor conditions.
He stood in the rain in the upper pasture and read the message twice.
Then he went to the high gate and looked down the track at the lower pasture.
The creek sound had changed again — not gradually, the way it had been changing all evening, but abruptly. A deeper, rougher pitch that rolled up the valley from the direction of Pine Ridge like a sound he had only ever heard on recordings of flash flood events. Not the sound of water rising. The sound of water moving with intent.
He watched the lower pasture in the darkness for forty-five seconds before the flashlight on his phone was sufficient to tell him what he needed to know: the creek had already breached the lower bank and was spreading across the southern third of the pasture. The water was moving quickly, sheeting across the flat ground in a thin but accelerating film that would be knee-deep on a sheep within twenty minutes.
The animals were safe. They were all in the upper pasture, behind a closed gate, on ground that was eleven meters higher than the lower pasture floor.
But the spillway was not safe.
The earthen berm that formed the southern boundary of the ranch's internal drainage system had been built in the nineteen-eighties as a simple flood management structure — a low earth wall reinforced with timber planking at its base, designed to redirect creek overflow into a controlled channel rather than letting it run unguided across the lower pasture. It had worked adequately for forty years.
It had not been designed for a nine-centimeter rainfall event with a simultaneous upstream dam failure superimposed on top of it.
Thomas shone his phone light at the berm from the high gate. In the flickering light and rain, the base of the berm looked different than it should. Lower. Wider. Spreading.
It was eroding.
Not collapsing — not yet — but the kind of slow, progressive failure that earthen structures made of compacted soil experienced when they were hit by water pressure they were not built to handle. The base was softening. The timber planking at the toe was washing out.
If the berm failed, the floodwater would not be channeled into the drainage system. It would run directly across the lower pasture toward the hay barn and, if it reached sufficient depth, toward the ranch house foundations.
Thomas stood in the rain doing the arithmetic of what he needed and what he had. He had three pallets of heavy oak fencing timber in the equipment yard — four-by-six hardwood blanks, each one roughly four meters long and sixty kilograms in weight.
Moving them to the berm's toe to reinforce the failing base would require a vehicle, a loading chain, and either a tractor or something capable of sustained pull-force work in wet, soft ground.
The tractor was in the lower barn, already surrounded by floodwater.
He turned and looked at Barnaby, who was standing at the upper pasture fence looking down at the lower pasture with the same focused attention he had held at the stable yard three hours earlier.
"I need your help," Thomas said. "Again."
The text alert from the county emergency system arrived at eight fifty-three with a sound that Thomas had set to the loudest possible tone for exactly this kind of moment.
He read it standing in the rain beside the upper pasture fence. He read it a second time. Then he put the phone away and stood for thirty seconds looking at the lower pasture.
The partial dam failure upstream meant the drainage channel above Highfield Ranch was carrying three to four times its normal flood flow. The creek had already absorbed some of this, which accounted for the sound change he had been tracking all evening.
But the drainage channel also connected directly to the ranch's internal spillway system — the earthen berm at the south end of the lower pasture that managed overflow during flood events.
That berm had been built for the creek's normal hundred-year flood level. Not for a simultaneous dam failure on top of a nine-centimeter rainfall event.
He ran the numbers quickly. The berm's overflow capacity, the creek's current apparent level, the rate of water arriving from the upstream failure, the time until the main rainfall band arrived. The numbers did not produce a comfortable result.
The berm needed reinforcement. It needed it in the next ninety minutes, before the heavy band of rain arrived and the water pressure behind the berm reached its peak.
He looked at Barnaby. The horse was watching the creek from the upper pasture fence with the same focused attention he had held at the stable yard four hours earlier.
Thomas went to the tack room.
