The storm arrived three days later without apology.
It came from the northwest, rolling down from the high mountain passes in dense, fast-moving walls of black cloud that erased the peaks of Blackwood Ridge by mid-morning and turned the pine forests into a roaring, silver-grey curtain of rain.
By afternoon the surface drainage channels around the mine entrance were running white with fast water, carrying mud and broken pine branches down toward the valley road.
Inside Ironstone Mine, the change was felt before it was heard.
The ambient air temperature dropped four degrees in thirty minutes.
A thin, cold mist began forming at the intersection of the warm gallery air and the cold water seeping in through the upper rock fractures.
And the walls began to weep.
Fine streams of muddy water appeared along the granite ceiling of the third-level western gallery, running down the mortar joints of the support beam installations and collecting in the drainage sumps below the wooden floor planks.
Thomas walked the entire length of the third-level main gallery, his oil lamp held high, his pickaxe tapping against every structural post in a steady, methodical rhythm.
"Caleb," he called, his voice carrying a controlled urgency that told the experienced workers around him that this was not a routine inspection.
"Come here."
Caleb crossed the gallery in a dozen long strides, arriving beside Thomas and holding his own lamp up toward the ceiling joint Thomas was examining.
"Feel this beam," Thomas said.
Caleb pressed his palm flat against the surface of the large oak ceiling post.
He held it there for five seconds, and then pulled it away slowly.
"It's vibrating," Caleb said quietly.
"That beam is vibrating against the ceiling mount."
"The upper ground is shifting."
Thomas nodded.
"The saturated mud layer on the upper ridge is building hydraulic pressure against the old limestone cap that covers the second level."
"If enough water collects in that cap and the pressure exceeds what these Victorian timbers can resist —"
He left the sentence unfinished.
He did not need to finish it.
"We clear the level," Caleb said immediately, turning toward the rear of the gallery.
"Toby!"
"Get your tools in the bucket and bring Pip to the main elevator cage right now!"
"On it, Dad!" Toby's voice came back from the rear alcove.
Pip materialized first, scampering through the gallery at full speed with his nails clicking sharply against the wooden planks, ears pinned flat against his skull.
In the upper quartz gallery of the second level, thirty feet above the working crews, Onyx had been awake and moving for over an hour.
His skin had registered the falling barometric pressure well before the storm arrived, and the seismic signature traveling through the granite over the past hour had shifted from the familiar rhythm of normal crew activity into something different — a subtle, low-frequency tremor that originated not from human tools but from the mountain itself.
He ran the full length of his second-level patrol route, pressing his belly against high ledges and listening to the stone.
The vibration was building.
It was slow and deep, like a very large, very heavy object gradually losing its grip on an equally large, equally heavy surface.
Onyx turned back toward the quartz alcove, then stopped.
His golden eyes fixed on the lower gallery ceiling directly above the section where Toby's smaller footsteps were now moving at a fast, anxious pace.
He stayed exactly where he was.
Thomas made a third pass along the main gallery ceiling, stopping at each timber mount and pressing his palm flat against the surface for a five-count before moving on.
Of the nine ceiling mounts in the western corridor, four were vibrating.
Not all four at the same frequency — that would have indicated a single localized stress event.
They were each vibrating at slightly different frequencies, which meant the pressure was being applied from above across a broad area, distributed through the limestone cap layer like water pressing against a membrane.
"How much time do we have?" Caleb asked quietly, keeping his voice level so the junior workers at the far end of the corridor could not detect the urgency behind the question.
"I don't know," Thomas said with equal quiet.
"Could be hours."
"Could be minutes."
"I am not prepared to wait to find out which."
Caleb moved away from the vibrating beam without turning his back to it, the way you move away from a large animal that has not yet decided how it intends to respond.
"Sato, Briggs," he called out across the gallery floor in his full working voice.
"Tools down, carts to the side."
"We're clearing the level."
The two junior workers — a stocky man in his thirties named Sato and a recent hire named Briggs who was on only his fourth shift — responded immediately to the authority in Caleb's voice, setting down their equipment and beginning the standard exit procedure without asking questions.
That was one of the first practical lessons a new mine worker learned: when a senior crew member says clear the level in that voice, you clear the level first and ask questions at the surface.
Toby had heard his father's voice use that register once before, during a minor gas pocket incident three years ago.
He did not need to be told twice.

The terrier was already standing, ears forward, his whole body oriented toward the elevator cage at the far end of the main gallery.
