The darkness inside the sealed alcove was total and immediate.
Toby's primary brass oil lamp had taken a direct hit from a falling granite fragment during the collapse, and the reservoir had cracked, spilling fuel down the sidewall and extinguishing the flame in a single smoky gasp.
He sat with his back against the cool stone, one hand resting on Pip's rough fur, and gave himself thirty seconds of complete stillness.
He did not panic.
He had been underground enough times with his father to understand that the first expenditure of oxygen inside a sealed space should never be panic.
He reached into the inside pocket of his canvas jacket and found his small brass match case by touch: cylindrical, smooth, with the reassuring weight of a dozen matches inside.
His other hand located the stub of wax candle he had carried as a backup for six weeks without ever needing it.
He struck the match against the iron buckle of his belt, and a warm yellow flame sputtered to life.
He touched it to the candle wick and watched the small, clear circle of light push the darkness back two feet in every direction.
It was not much.
It was enough.
The candlelight showed him a space roughly twenty feet deep and eight feet wide, with a solid granite ceiling four feet above his head.
The far wall was solid rock.
The left and right walls were solid granite with a timber-frame panel lining along the inner face.
Behind him, where the corridor entrance had been, was thirty feet of impacted rubble: granite blocks the size of suitcases, clay-rich debris, and shattered oak beams packed so tightly together they had formed a single coherent mass, as solid as the mountain itself.
The floor was wet.
Not merely damp — wet, with a thin, steady sheet of cold, muddy groundwater advancing across the stone from the left wall seam at a rate he could actually observe with the naked eye if he watched carefully.
Toby pulled out his silver pocket watch and angled it toward the candlelight.
Four twenty-three in the afternoon.
He made calculations quickly, the way his father had taught him to make calculations when there was no time to write anything down.
The air pocket he was sitting in contained enough oxygen for a conscious adult to breathe without impairment for approximately five hours.
That put his oxygen window at around nine-twenty in the evening at the outside limit.
But the water was the more pressing variable.
He watched the advancing edge of the groundwater sheet for sixty seconds and estimated its rate.
At the current rate of inflow, the water level would reach twelve inches in approximately two hours.
At twelve inches of standing water in a sealed granite pocket with a four-foot ceiling, a fourteen-year-old boy could not sit above water level.
"Okay, Pip," Toby said quietly, lifting the candle and beginning a systematic inspection of the alcove walls.
"We are not going to sit here and wait."
Pip stood up, shook the dust from his wiry coat, and moved immediately to Toby's side.
His tail, against all reasonable expectation, began to wag.
Toby ran his free hand along the timber-frame paneling on the left wall, pressing his palm flat against each section in sequence, feeling for any variation in temperature or air movement.
He worked slowly and methodically from the floor upward to the ceiling joint, moving along the wall one body-width at a time.
He had reached the third panel from the far wall corner when his palm registered something completely different from everything he had felt before.
The panel beneath his hand was not damp.
It was dry.
And from the thin gap where the panel frame met the upper granite ceiling, a faint but unmistakable current of cool, fresh air was moving against his skin.
"There's something behind here," Toby said, his voice dropping low with concentrated focus.
"There's definitely something behind this wall."
The water was at ankle depth and rising when Toby completed his first full inspection of the alcove walls.
He had found the dry panel on the left wall, felt the air current from its upper joint, and confirmed that something structurally different existed behind it.
He had also found, on the right wall, a section of granite that produced a distinctly hollow acoustic response when he tapped it with the head of his iron pick — not a useful hollow, since the rock behind it was solid, but an acoustic artifact of a natural fissure that ran parallel to the wall face.
The floor had no gaps, no drainage points, no feature of any kind that would slow the water inflow.
He made his assessment.
The left wall panel was the only meaningful possibility.
He sat with his back against the rear wall, his feet on a raised tool bucket to keep his boots above the water level, and used the remaining life of his candle to think through what he knew.
Behind that panel, according to the 1885 survey schematic he had studied that morning, was the secondary drainage flue.
The flue ran upward at a shallow gradient toward the second level.
If it was unblocked — and the air current suggested it was at least partially open — it led to an inspection chimney, and the chimney led to the second-level main gallery floor.
The second level had been cleared along with the third level.
But the second level was not under the collapsed limestone cap section.
If it was structurally intact, which it should be, and if the inspection chimney trapdoor could be opened from the inside, and if the ladder rungs were load-bearing after fifty years — three significant conditional statements, each of which had to be true for the plan to work — then there was a way out.
Toby looked at the three conditional statements with the same methodical focus he applied to structural survey problems.
The air current meant the flue was open: first condition probable.
Victorian brass latch mechanisms on inspection trapdoors were designed to be operable from both sides: second condition probable.
Victorian wrought-iron ladder rungs in dry granite do not corrode to structural failure in fifty years: third condition highly probable.
He was not certain.
But he had enough information to make a decision, and the water was now covering the floor to a depth that made the decision for him.
"All right, Pip," Toby said, sliding off the tool bucket into the cold water and picking up his iron hand-pick.
"Let's open that panel."
