Spring 1918. The Seicheprey sector. Mustard gas was the worst weapon on the Western Front, and it did not announce itself the way high explosive shells did. A gas shell landing in a trench sounded different from a high explosive round — a softer, less violent impact — but in the darkness and noise of a bombardment, that difference could be missed.
Mustard gas had no strong immediate odor at first detection. It could saturate a low-lying trench section for minutes before the smell became noticeable to human senses. By then, any soldier without his gas mask already fitted and sealed was in serious danger of chemical burns to the lungs, eyes, and exposed skin.
The 102nd Infantry Regiment had gas drills regularly. Every man carried his mask. Officers walked the line checking mask conditions. But gas attacks happened fast, and they happened at night, and exhausted men in cold dugouts fell into sleep that was sometimes deeper than their training.
Private Conroy was asleep in the dugout at two forty-five in the morning on April 13th, 1918. Stubby was not asleep.
He had been moving through the trench in his usual nighttime patrol — not because anyone had assigned him this function, but because moving and checking and knowing the current state of his surroundings was simply what he did, in the trenches the same as he had done it aboard the SS Minnesota and on the Yale Bowl training ground. He moved from bay to bay, checking the sentries, nosing briefly at doorways, reading the smell of the night.
At approximately two-fifty AM, something in the air changed. The change was not large enough for any human nose in the trench to register it. Mustard gas — dichlorodiethyl sulfide — has an odor that has been described as vaguely similar to mustard, or garlic, or freshly cut hay, depending on concentration.
At very low concentrations, in the open air of a trench where a thousand other smells were constantly present, a human being could not reliably detect it. Stubby's nose had approximately forty times the receptor density of a human nose, and a significantly larger proportion of his brain devoted to processing olfactory information. He detected the change immediately.
He turned from the trench bay he had been inspecting and moved at speed back toward the dugout where the off-duty soldiers were sleeping. He did not bark — his bark was reserved for direct alerts, for sounds of approaching raiders, for specific threats requiring immediate human attention. What he did instead was more targeted than a bark.
He bit Private Conroy's boot. He bit it hard enough to wake him, hard enough that Conroy came upright with a sharp intake of breath, disoriented for a moment. Before Conroy had fully surfaced from sleep, Stubby was already moving to the next sleeping soldier, nosing urgently at his face, turning, moving on.
His movement was rapid and deliberate — not panicked, but intense with a specific directional urgency that every soldier who was present later described the same way: the dog knew exactly what he was doing. Conroy smelled it within thirty seconds of waking.
He pulled his mask from his belt in the dark, had it sealed over his face before he had fully processed what the smell meant, and then began shouting the gas alarm through his mask at the same moment that the sentry on duty two bays down, who had also just detected the odor, was reaching for the alarm bell.
The dugout was cleared in ninety seconds. Three soldiers who had slept through the initial alert were roused by Stubby's physical insistence before the gas concentration reached damaging levels in the dugout. Two of those three had been sleeping with their masks on the floor rather than on their belts — a regulation violation that had just been corrected, at speed, by a thirty-pound terrier.
The gas cloud settled into the trench sector for twenty minutes before the wind shifted and dispersed it. No one in the 102nd's dugout cluster was seriously injured. The regimental surgeon later noted in his after-action report that the early warning had been decisive. Gas casualties in adjacent trench sectors where the alarm had come later were significantly heavier.
It was not the first time Stubby had detected an approaching gas attack. The men had noticed over the preceding weeks that he became restless and began his wake-up patrol before the official gas alarm sounded. They had begun watching him as an informal early-warning system without fully articulating it.
After April 13th, they articulated it clearly. A custom gas mask was fitted for Stubby — a smaller version of the standard-issue mask, designed to fit over his broad muzzle and seal around his jaw. He tolerated it with minimal resistance, and he wore it during gas alerts without attempting to remove it.
The regiment's informal agreement became: when Stubby moves fast and bites boots, everyone puts their mask on. No questions asked.
