Bram felt the dark shadow tendrils tightening around his limbs, trying to crush his living form. He did not panic. Instead of fighting the dark magic with physical muscle, Bram tapped into his deepest stone anchor. He closed his amber eyes and summoned the ancient elemental mass of the earth itself. His slate-colored hide turned into pure, unyielding dark granite from nose to tail. He became a solid, fifteen-hundred-pound block of living mountain stone. The shadow tendrils, designed to bind flesh and blood, could not constrain the weight of solid granite. The dark ropes snapped under the sheer density of his transformed body.
Bram landed heavily on the platform, his granite paws cracking the concrete beneath him. The cult leader swung his dagger, but the blade struck Bram's stone shoulder and shattered into metallic splinters. The leader stumbled back, clutching his stung wrist in agony.
Bram reverted his head to flesh form, his golden eyes blazing with inner fire. "Stone does not break for shadow," Bram rumbled, his voice reverberating through the vaulted station. He spread his broad wings, gathering a swirl of golden starlight magic around his body.
The cult leader scrambled to his feet, his eyes wild with rage as he looked at his shattered weapon. "A gargoyle familiar!" the leader screamed, pulling a long black dagger from his robes. "Destroy him!"
The two assistant cultists rose quickly, summoning dark shadow tendrils from the floor cracks. The tendrils whipped out like black ropes, binding Bram's wings and legs to the platform. The dark magic was icy cold, attempting to seep through his skin to freeze his heart.
Bram growled, straining against the dark bindings, but the cultists channeled more power into the spell. "You are trapped, stone-bird!" the leader mocked, advancing with his black dagger. "This blade is coated in void-acid — it will dissolve your granite core!"
Bram looked at the approaching dagger, his expression calm and fearless. "You don't understand stone," Bram rumbled softly. He closed his eyes and activated his deepest elemental defense. Instead of fighting the shadow tendrils, Bram allowed his entire body to turn into indestructible, high-density granite. His skin, muscles, and organs hardened into solid rock. The immense physical weight of fifteen hundred pounds of granite crushed the shadow tendrils beneath his paws. The dark ropes snapped like brittle twigs.
The cult leader lunged forward, thrusting the void-acid dagger straight at Bram's chest. The blade struck Bram's granite chest with a loud metallic clang and shattered into harmless fragments. The leader recoiled in shock, clutching his stinging hand.
Bram didn't give the cultists another second to react. He shifted his upper body back to living muscle and spread his broad wings wide. He drew a massive breath of subterranean air into his stone lungs, gathering all his stored starlight magic. He unleashed a magnificent, roaring wing-strike — a sonic wave of pure harmonic energy that reverberated through the high iron rafters of the station.
The sonic wave hit the cultists like a cannon blast, hurling all three into the far iron wall. They struck the metal plating and slid to the floor, unconscious and disarmed. The purple siphon circle on the platform dissolved into a shower of harmless grey dust.
Above the platform, the liquid fire stopped flowing downward and began to return to the ceiling. Bram flew up to the ceiling vault, using his wings to guide the golden light back into the ember. The Ever-Flaring Ember blazed back to life, filling the station with warm, pure golden light. The dark mist vanished completely, and the market was saved.
