The murmuring Spire rose from the center of the Aethelgard mountain range like a natural cathedral of dark basalt and ancient stone, its peak wreathed perpetually in thin cloud and the strange, melodic wind harmonics that gave it its name. Local legend held that the Spire was the original nesting ground of the first elder gryphons of the pre-Archon era—and that the wind harmonics were actually the encoded acoustic signatures of every gryphon flight path ever traced across the Aethelgard skies, embedded in the rock over thousands of years of high-altitude sonic resonance.
Kael had studied the Spire in the Institute's geography modules. He had never imagined he would be flying toward it in the middle of the night on the back of a soul-bonded ember gryphon fledgling with a Frost Archon's shadow army spreading across the valley below.
Ignis climbed steadily, his ember wings cutting through the dark night air in long, powerful strokes. At three thousand meters, the air became thin enough that Kael's breath came in visible puffs of white vapor.
He pulled his survey coat tighter, grateful for the radiant warmth flowing through the soul-tether from Ignis's body.
"The Codex says the first rite is flight above the murmuring Spire," Kael shouted over the wind. "It doesn't say what happens when we get there!"
Ignis answered with a sharp bank to the left, angling his wings toward a narrow updraft channel that funneled warm air from the mountain's volcanic fault lines directly toward the Spire's peak. As they broke through the cloud layer and the Spire's wind harmonics swept over them, Kael felt the soul-tether react.
The bond between them—that warm pulse behind his sternum—expanded suddenly, rushing outward through his arms, his legs, his fingertips. He felt Ignis's heartbeat as clearly as his own—fifty beats per minute, strong and steady as a forge drum.
He felt the gryphon's muscles through the wing strokes, his thermal field spreading in a twenty-foot radius, his amber eyes tracking the sky in a three-hundred-sixty-degree sphere. *He could see through Ignis's eyes.
* Not completely—not a full ocular replacement—but a secondary awareness, like a second window opening in his mind. Through the gryphon's vision, the dark mountain range below glowed with elemental energy signatures: warm veins of volcanic heat in red and amber, cold shadow-frost energy spreading from the valley in deep blue tendrils.
And far below, moving in coordinated columns through the mountain passes toward the murmuring Spire, the gargoyle vanguard.
"They're following us!" Kael called!
Ignis folded his wings and dove through a gap in the cloud layer, angling toward a narrow basalt ledge on the Spire's eastern face. Carved into the ancient stone—invisible from below but perfectly visible through the gryphon's elemental-sight—were thousands of tiny glyph marks, etched by talon over millennia.
The gryphon flight language. Kael pulled his survey journal from his satchel, pressing the open pages against the carved stone, reading by the light of Ignis's ember glow.
The ancient glyphs told the story of the five elder gryphons who had defeated the last Frost Archon three centuries ago—the five who had formed the Sky Aerie, a collective elemental bond of fire and solar magic strong enough to melt the Archon's shadow-frost barrier forever. And at the center of the glyph record was a single repeated symbol: the shape of a human hand clasped around a gryphon talon.
The soul-tether. The key to everything. Kael's elemental amulet blazed gold—First Rite complete.
Above them, the cloud layer glowed blue-white as the frost gargoyle column crested the mountain ridge.
