The frost gargoyle vanguard hit the murmuring Spire's upper ledge like a wave of shadow and ice. Ignis launched from the carved basalt ledge without hesitation, his ember wings igniting to full thermal intensity—the dark sky around them exploding with amber and crimson light as the gryphon's feather temperature spiked to combat level! SCREEEEEE!
His war cry shook ice crystals from the Spire's rocky face! Kael leaned low over the gryphon's neck, his elemental rod extended, channeling solar warmth from his palm into the brass tip as Ignis tore through the first gargoyle column! Two frost gargoyles shattered on contact with the gryphon's ember wings—the extreme thermal differential between their frozen armor and Ignis's 600-degree feather surface caused instant thermal fracture!
CRACK-BOOM! CRACK-BOOM! But there were too many. Thirty gargoyles peeled off from the column, flanking wide on both sides, trying to box Ignis into a pincer formation!
"Break right! Hard right!" Kael shouted—and felt Ignis respond through the soul-tether before the words were fully out of his mouth, banking into a steep spiral that took them clear of the pincers!
They dove through the cloud layer, screaming downward along the Spire's northern face, losing the pursuit column in the fog—but Kael already knew where they needed to go next. The Codex's second rite: *The Frozen Sanctuary.
* From Veyra's briefing notes, Kael recalled the location: a hidden aerie plateau on the Spire's western shoulder, preserved since the pre-Archon era by a natural solar magic barrier—a place where the five elder gryphons had once roosted and practiced their elemental arts.
If the Frost Archon's corruption had reached it, the second rite would fail. If it was still protected—they might find something invaluable. Ignis landed on the Sanctuary plateau with careful, quiet precision.
Kael stared. The plateau was enormous—perhaps three hundred feet across—entirely enclosed by tall, naturally formed basalt columns arranged in a rough circle. Every surface was coated in a thick layer of blue-white frost magic ice, and the ice glowed with that familiar shadow-corrupted pulse of the Frost Archon's energy.
Ancient nesting alcoves carved into the basalt walls were sealed under foot-thick ice slabs. Inside each alcove, frozen behind the corruption ice, Kael could see the unmistakable outlines of preserved elemental artifacts: carved solar-opal talismans, rune-etched flight feathers the size of sword blades, and at the center alcove—sealed behind the thickest ice block—something that blazed with captured solar fire even through the corruption.
A sun-rune forge stone. Ignis pressed his beak against the corruption ice and released a sustained thermal breath—the gryphon equivalent of breathing fire—at the surface. The shadow-frost hissed, crackled, and retreated slightly under the heat.
But the corruption was deep-rooted; it would take concentrated, sustained thermal energy to clear it fully.
"We can't do this alone," Kael realized aloud. "We need the Solar Core's power to forge a sun-rune strong enough to melt this corruption permanently. That's the third rite—the descent to the Solar Core."
Ignis stepped back from the ice, his ember feathers dimming slightly with the effort of the sustained thermal breath. Then the shadow-frost ice cracked—and three frost gargoyle scouts emerged from the alcove ceiling where they had been frozen in dormancy, their blue eyes igniting with hostile energy! The fight for the Frozen Sanctuary had begun.
