The freezing of the Emerald Pool was a tragic sight to witness.
The water, which had bubbled with life and warmth for generations, began to churn as the black frost invaded its depths. Steam rose in thick, frantic plumes before dying out as the surface turned into a thick sheet of dark, glass-like ice.
Within thirty minutes, the entire pool was frozen solid. The aquatic plants beneath the surface were preserved in crystal clarity, locked in a silent, frozen stasis.
Lumina flew down from the quartz bridge to the edge of the pool.
She pressed her chest against the ice, sending a wave of intense solar heat through the frozen surface. A small patch of ice melted, bubbling for a few seconds, but the surrounding cold was so pervasive that the meltwater froze again as soon as she lifted her body.
The black frost was actively consuming the geothermal energy of the mountain.
"It is absorbing the earth's heat," Lumina realized, her golden eyes narrowing. "This is not natural weather. It is an ancient frost-curse from the deep trench."
Behind her, the entrance to the Deep Caverns was beginning to show signs of frost accumulation.
The animals inside were safe for now, warmed by the deep heat of the mountain's interior, but the frost was slowly sealing the cavern mouth with thick curtains of icicles.
If the entrance was completely sealed, the air inside would stale, and the animals would be trapped in the dark.
Astra emerged from the cave mouth, her breath puffing in heavy clouds.
"Lumina!" the snow-leopard called out above the roaring wind. "The ice is closing the archway! We cannot break it from inside!"
Lumina turned away from the pool, her decision made.
"Stay inside the deep chamber," Lumina commanded, her voice ringing clear over the storm. "I must go to the peak."
"In this storm?" Astra asked, looking up at the raging black vortex above the mountain. "You will freeze before you reach the summit!"
"If I stay here, we all freeze," Lumina replied softly. "Hold the line, Astra."
With the animals safely enclosed within the Deep Caverns, Lumina allowed her thermal dome to contract.
She pulled her energy back into her core, saving her strength for the long climb to Sunstone Peak.
The moment her heat barrier collapsed, the black frost flooded the central basin like a breaking dam.
The Emerald Pool, already frozen along its edges, solidified completely in a matter of seconds.
The deep green water turned into a solid block of dark ice that shattered the surrounding stone banks with immense force.
The lush bushes, the flower beds, the ancient mosses — all were engulfed beneath a meter of black frost.
Lumina hovered three meters above the frozen surface of the pool, watching her home disappear.
The loss was painful, but she kept her focus on the task ahead.
"The land can be reborn," she reminded herself, her wings beating steadily.
"As long as the root of the mountain remains alive, the green will return."
She looked up toward the narrow chimney path that led from the sanctuary bowl to the upper reaches of Sunstone Peak.
The chimney was a natural rock corridor that spiraled up the mountain's eastern face.
In normal times, it was an easy flight path, sheltered from the strong mountain winds by high cliff walls.
Now, the chimney had become a funnel for the black frost gale.
Howling winds screamed down the narrow stone corridor, carrying sharp ice fragments that could strip the feathers from an unprepared bird.
Lumina adjusted her flight posture, tucking her head close to her shoulders.
She aligned her body with the core of the wind and surged upward into the dark tunnel of rock.
The cold inside the chimney was absolute.
It was a cold that existed beyond temperature — a heavy, suffocating presence that sought to freeze time itself.
She beat her wings with rhythmic precision, using her talons to scrape against the icy rock walls whenever the wind threatened to push her backward.
Step by step, meter by meter, she fought her way up the mountain's throat.
The chimney corridor was a dark throat of ice and stone.
The wind inside howled with the voice of a thousand furious winter storms.
Lumina fought her way upward, using every thermal eddy she could generate.
"The cold is dense," she observed as her wingtips brushed the frozen rock.
"It seeks to lock the mountain's breath."
She paused on a small ledge to catch her breath.
Her core flame was burning steadily, but the external frost was heavy.
She shook her wings, sending a shower of ice crystals cascading into the dark shaft below.
"I must reach the high gap," she thought, looking up into the gloom.
Above her, the wind shrieked through a narrow fracture in the rock face.
She gathered her strength and launched herself from the ledge.
The updraft in the fracture was wild and chaotic.
She used her tail feathers like a rudder, steering through the violent turbulence with practiced skill.
The light of the upper peak was visible ahead — a faint grey opening against the black storm.
She surged forward with a final beat of her wings.
The open slope was just ahead.
The dark ice had now covered sixty percent of the sanctuary floor.
Lumina glided low over the frozen runoff channels, observing how the black frost was sealing the subterranean steam vents.
"The core heat is being forced deeper into the rock," she noted, feeling the subterranean pressure shift.
"If the vents are completely sealed, the pressure will build until the stone fractures."
She hovered near the main cave entrance for one final check before beginning her ascent.
The heavy stone door of the Deep Caverns was firmly in place, secured by the stags.
She knew her path now lay straight up toward the summit.
