Lumina let out her emergency call — a high-frequency, bell-like screech that vibrated through the very bedrock of Aurora Ridge.
The sound resonated through the quartz formations, sending a pulse of sonic energy that temporarily shattered the ice curtains closing over the cavern mouth. The animals inside gave a collective cry of hope as the entrance cleared.
Without waiting another second, Lumina launched herself into the storm.
The moment she cleared the protective rim of the sanctuary bowl, the full force of the arctic gale hit her. The wind was so powerful it threatened to snap her wing bones, and the temperature was low enough to freeze water instantaneously in mid-air.
She beat her wings rhythmically, leaning into the headwind as she began the steep ascent toward Sunstone Peak.
The flight was brutal.
Every meter of altitude gained required tremendous physical effort. The black frost clung to her crystalline feathers, adding weight to her wings and dampening her core flame.
Below her, the familiar landmarks of the ridge were disappearing under a blanket of dark snow. The quartz bridge, the emerald basin, the green meadows — all were being buried beneath the advancing darkness.
She looked up.
The peak was three thousand meters above sea level, a sheer spire of granite that pierced the storm clouds. At its apex stood the Sunstone Altar, surrounded by four ancient stone pillars that had been carved by the first mountain guardians.
As she flew higher, the air grew thinner and colder.
Her internal fire flickered, its golden light dimming under the crushing weight of the alpine chill. She could feel her energy draining, her heartbeat slowing as the cold began to penetrate her inner chest cavity.
"I cannot stop," she whispered to herself, her thoughts focused on the cubs and fawns sheltering in the dark below. "The ridge must endure."
Halfway up the chimney corridor, Lumina encountered the first major structural obstruction.
A massive avalanche of black ice and fallen granite had collapsed into the narrow passage, creating a solid wall of frozen debris ten meters thick.
The wind was trapped behind the blockage, building immense pressure that vibrated through the rock walls with a deep, terrifying hum.
Lumina landed on a narrow ledge two meters below the ice wall.
She was panting hard, her crystalline feathers dusted with white frost that refused to melt.
"There is no way around," she observed, examining the shear granite walls on either side of the blockage.
The rock was too smooth and icy to climb, and flying out into the open gale on the mountain's face would be suicide in her current state.
She had to break through the wall.
She closed her eyes and focused on her core flame.
The solar energy inside her chest was down to less than half its full capacity.
Using a burst of heat now would weaken her for the final climb to the summit, but staying trapped in the chimney meant slow freezing.
"A focused beam," she decided, opening her eyes.
She drew a deep breath, pulling the thin alpine air into her lungs, and concentrated her thermal energy into her beak.
A thin line of white-hot solar plasma erupted from her beak, striking the center of the ice blockage.
The heat was so intense that the black ice did not melt into water — it vaporized instantly into superheated steam.
The steam expanded with explosive force, shattering the ice wall into thousands of tiny fragments that rained down into the dark abyss below.
The passage was clear.
Lumina did not hesitate. She launched herself through the gap before the surrounding ice could collapse to fill the void.
She emerged from the top of the chimney onto the open upper slopes of Sunstone Peak.
The gale hit her with full force, almost tearing her from the sky.
Above her, through the driving black snow, she could see the jagged silhouette of the Sunstone Altar.
The ice wall in the chimney was a solid barricade of black crystal.
Lumina stood on the narrow ledge, studying the structure of the barrier.
"It is reinforced by the dark ley lines," she noted, feeling the cold resonance.
"A simple strike will not shatter it."
She took three steps back along the ledge.
"I must use the solar pulse," she decided, her eyes shining with golden light.
She drew in a deep breath, filling her lungs with the freezing mountain air.
Her core flame flared brightly within her chest cavity.
She channeled the thermal energy up through her throat and out through her beak.
A beam of concentrated solar plasma struck the center of the ice wall.
The black ice hissed and cracked, turning into a cloud of white steam.
"Now!" Lumina cried, springing forward.
She flew through the expanding hole just as the upper section of the ice wall collapsed.
The cold air of the open peak greeted her with violent force.
She was through the chimney.
The Sunstone Altar was visible on the summit ahead.
The high chimney corridor grew narrower as she ascended.
The walls were coated in slick, glass-like ice that reflected the faint amber glow of her core fire.
She used the strong thermal updraft created by her own heat beam to propel herself through the upper gap.
"The air is getting thinner," she noticed, her breathing deep and controlled.
"The summit is close."
She emerged from the rock shaft into the full fury of the high-altitude gale.
The Sunstone Altar was visible through the driving black snow, three hundred meters ahead.
