Inside the Deep Caverns, the temperature was dropping slowly, but the atmosphere was tense.
Astra walked the length of the main chamber, her paws making soft clicking sounds on the warm stone floor. The cubs were asleep in a small hollow near a natural steam vent, curled tightly together for warmth.
The herd of stags occupied the center of the cavern, their breathing slow and synchronized.
"Will she make it?" asked the stag leader, his large eyes reflecting the faint crimson glow of the geothermal vents.
"She has guarded this mountain longer than our lineages have existed," Astra said, though her own heart was heavy with worry. "She will reach the altar."
Outside the cavern, the sound of the storm was terrifying.
The wind roared like a pack of hunting wolves, slamming against the granite cliff faces with immense force. Every few minutes, a heavy thud reverberated through the rock as large icicles broke free from the upper cliffs and shattered on the valley floor.
Astra moved to the cavern threshold and looked out through the narrow opening.
The black frost had completely covered the sanctuary bowl. The Emerald Pool was invisible beneath a meter of black ice and drifted snow. The quartz bridge looked like a ghost structure, barely discernible in the dark.
High above, near the summit, she saw a faint speck of golden light struggling against the sea of black clouds.
It was Lumina.
The light was small — no larger than a spark — but it was moving upward, refusing to be snuffed out by the howling gale.
Astra bowed her head and let out a low, purring chant — an ancient song of the snow-leopards that praised the heat of the earth and the light of the sun.
Beside her, the stags joined in, stamping their hooves in a slow, rhythmic cadence that reverberated through the cavern walls.
They sent their strength upward into the cold.
Inside the Deep Caverns, the darkness was absolute except for the dim red glow of the thermal vents.
The animals sat in silence, listening to the muffled rumbles of the storm raging on the mountain above.
Astra sat near the cavern entrance, her ears flattened against her head as she listened to the stone.
"She has cleared the chimney," Astra announced softly to the herd.
The stag leader looked up from where he lay beside his fawns.
"How can you tell?" he asked.
"The vibration in the rock changed," Astra explained, pointing a paw toward the roof of the cavern.
"The air pressure in the upper shaft just dropped sharply. She broke the ice wall."
A low murmur of relief passed through the cavern, but Astra remained cautious.
She knew the hardest part of Lumina's journey was still ahead.
The upper slopes of Sunstone Peak were notorious for their violent, unpredictable wind shears.
Even in good weather, the peak was a dangerous place for flying creatures.
In a black frost storm, the peak became an elemental battleground where only the strongest could survive.
Astra's cubs crawled out from beneath her chest and looked up at their mother with wide, curious eyes.
"Will the sun come back, Mama?" asked the smaller cub, shivering slightly despite the cavern's warmth.
Astra licked the top of the cub's head, her rough tongue comforting the young animal.
"The sun is never truly gone, little one," Astra whispered gently.
"It is only waiting behind the peak."
"And Lumina will bring it back?" the cub asked.
"Lumina will bring it back," Astra promised, though her eyes remained fixed on the frozen cavern door.
She closed her eyes and resumed her purring chant, her voice joining the steady, rhythmic stamping of the stags' hooves.
Together, they kept the warmth of hope alive in the dark.
Inside the Deep Caverns, the atmosphere was warm and quiet.
The steam vents hissed softly, filling the large stone chamber with comforting heat.
Astra sat near the entrance, her eyes fixed on the narrow gap in the rock door.
"She is on the upper slope," Astra reported to the herd.
"How do you know?" the stag leader asked, lifting his head.
"The air in the shaft is clear," Astra answered, her tail twitching.
"The blockage is gone."
The cubs tumbled in the warm clover near the steam vent, their fears forgotten.
"Lumina is strong," the smaller cub purred, licking its paw.
"She is the guardian," Astra agreed softly.
Outside, the storm howled against the mountain's outer walls, but inside, the life of the ridge held firm.
The ewes rested together, their fawns sleeping soundly against their sides.
The stags kept watch near the door, their breath calm and steady.
"We wait for the light," Silver-Tine said, bowing his head.
"The light will come," Astra replied.
The mountain held its breath in the dark.
Inside the Deep Caverns, the steam vents continued to hum with reassuring heat.
The stags maintained their circle around the ewes and fawns, their calm breathing filling the chamber.
Astra sat by the door, her ears twitching as she listened to the mountain's structural sounds.
"She is past the narrow gap," Astra whispered to the cubs.
"She is approaching the summit platform."
The cubs snuggled closer to their mother's warm fur, reassured by her steady voice.
The sanctuary's life was holding in the dark.
The stalactites along the cavern ceiling dripped with warm condensation, forming small pools of clear water that the young fawns drank from gratefully.
Astra licked her paw and watched the entrance, her senses tuned to every frequency of the mountain's structure.
"She will reach the altar," Astra repeated softly.
The mountain was listening to her prayer.
