Kael was in the middle of a structural briefing with Zara, the colony's senior leaf-tier, when the rain began.
They were reviewing the eastern trail bridge — specifically a junction point where two silk cords had been showing tension fatigue over the past three days — when the first drops struck the roof of the main pavilion above them and the interior lighting shifted from the warm amber-green of filtered sunlight to the flat grey of storm light.
Zara was older than Kael by four months, a significant gap in ant terms. She was larger across the thorax, with the specific foreleg callusing that came from thousands of silk-stitching operations, and her antennae moved in the controlled, economical pattern of an ant who had processed a great deal of information over a long career and had learned to filter out everything that was not immediately relevant.
She stopped mid-sentence when the rain began and turned her head to read the vibration pattern coming through the leaf floor.
"That is not ordinary rain," she said.
She was right. The drops came faster within thirty seconds, and within ninety seconds they were arriving in a continuous sheet — the signature of a tropical monsoon squall rather than a passing shower.
The wind arrived simultaneously, a gust from the northwest that hit the upper canopy with a lateral force that bent the terminal branches and sent a series of sharp snapping vibrations through the fig tree's branch structure.
The pavilion held. Its leaf walls flexed and shifted, absorbing the wind load through the distributed tension of the silk stitching, but the structural integrity remained. Kael felt the stress signals running through the floor beneath his feet and read them with the practiced attention of a builder who had maintained this structure for eight months: the stresses were high but within the range the stitching was designed to carry.
Then the secondary nest — the four-leaf chamber to the southeast — went silent. Not the normal silence of an unoccupied space, but the specific absence of signal that indicated structural failure: a chamber that had been producing vibration was no longer producing it because it was no longer there.
Kael and Zara reached the southeast junction simultaneously. The south entry port was intact, but beyond it, where the silk-reinforced vine connection led to the secondary chamber, there was open air.
The vine connection had held. The secondary chamber had not. A gust of wind had caught the four-leaf structure at the precise angle to overcome its stitching tension, and the leaves had separated, the silk bonds pulling free at their attachment points as the wind torqued the structure in conflicting directions.
The secondary chamber had contained three things: a food storage cache representing approximately two days of colony provisions, a maintenance supply of pre-spun silk cord, and — Kael felt the information arrive like a physical weight — seventeen larvae that had been moved there that morning for temperature regulation in what should have been a calmer and slightly warmer microenvironment.
Seventeen larvae. Each one irreplaceable. Each one a future silk-producer, a future worker, a future builder. Each one currently somewhere in the three-hundred-foot drop to the forest floor.
Kael was already moving toward the vine connection before the analysis was complete. Zara caught him with a foreleg and held him.
"The wind is still at maximum," she said. "If you go onto the outer vine now, it will carry you off with the same force it used on the chamber."
Kael stopped. He read the wind with his antennae. She was correct. The gust cycle was approximately forty seconds on, twenty seconds off.
He could feel the pattern now that he was paying attention to it rather than to the catastrophe he was reacting to.
"How many of the larvae do you think survived the chamber separation?" he asked.
"Larvae are resilient to impact within their silk casings," Zara said. "If any of the leaf sections caught on an adjacent branch rather than falling free, some may still be viable. We need visual confirmation." Kael waited. Forty-two seconds. When the wind dropped, he went across.
The canopy rustled softly above the leaf bridge.
