He had crossed it hundreds of times before, but always in dry conditions, always with the normal load of an ant in transit rather than the urgent, slightly too-fast movement of an ant crossing damaged terrain in active storm conditions.
He made it across and stopped at the end of the vine where the silk reinforcement structure that had held the secondary chamber now trailed in three separate severed strands. Below him, the full three-hundred-foot drop of the Daintree canopy opened in layers of descending green. He had never paid particular attention to the depth before. He paid attention to it now.
He found the first leaf section twelve inches below the vine end, caught on a lateral twig of an adjacent branch, still folded roughly into the curved position it had been stitched into. He descended to it along the twig surface, moving carefully on the rain-wet bark, and confirmed with his antennae what his visual read had suggested: three larvae inside the leaf fold, still viable, their silk casings intact and their body movements indicating alert survival rather than injury shock.
Getting them back up required a different technique than carrying them normally. Larvae could be transported by adult workers using the standard mandible carry — grasping them at the silk casing with the care of long practice — but transporting them vertically up a wet twig surface under an active storm while managing your own footing was a three-body problem that Kael could not solve alone.
He marked the location with a pheromone signal, memorizing the pattern precisely, and continued searching. The second leaf section had not caught on anything.
He found it by following the pheromone trail it had released during the separation — larvae produce a distress signal that carries several inches in still air — and traced it to the edge of the branch, where the leaf had folded around a projecting bark fragment and wedged.
Six more larvae, five viable, one whose silk casing had been compromised by the impact. He noted the compromised casing with the specific chemical marker that would tell nurse workers to prioritize that individual upon recovery. The third and fourth leaf sections were gone. He searched the branch surface and the adjacent vine structure for twenty minutes during wind gaps, following every available chemical trace.
Nothing. Either they had fallen clear to the lower canopy or been carried far enough laterally by the wind to be beyond recovery range. Eight larvae in two locations. Eleven unaccounted for.
Kael climbed back to the vine connection and transmitted the full report to Zara using the contact chemical vocabulary of the builder caste — a rapid series of antennal touches that conveyed location, count, conditions, and urgency simultaneously. Zara received the report. "I can send four carriers. But we need them to work simultaneously on both sites, or the wind will return before we finish the recovery."
"Four is not enough for simultaneous recovery at both sites," Kael said. "We need eight, with two as vine anchors."
Zara was quiet for a moment — the ant equivalent of running a resource calculation. "The guard rotation cannot be reduced in storm conditions.
The food team is committed." "Then I will be the second anchor," Kael said.
An anchor worker's function was exactly what the name indicated: they gripped the vine or branch surface with all six legs and held a fixed position against the wind load while other workers used their body as a fixed point for their safety loops. It was not technically a builder function.
But Kael had the foreleg grip strength of a builder, which was significantly above average, and right now the colony needed grip strength more than bridge tension calculations. He positioned himself at the vine junction.
Zara organized the carrier team. Six workers, moving in pairs, one pair to each larva site, the anchor points providing the fixed reference that kept them on the surface when the next wind gust arrived.
They recovered seven of the eight viable larvae within thirty minutes. The eighth had shifted position during Kael's second survey and required an additional search that extended into the next wind cycle.
He found it pressed into a bark crevice twenty inches below his anchor position, still viable, its silk casing unmarked. Eight larvae recovered.
