The bark trail along the main trunk's eastern face was the colony's primary long-distance foraging route, running approximately sixty feet down to a zone of flowering vine clusters the colony had been harvesting for two seasons. In normal conditions, it was a well-maintained highway — chemical markers clear and fresh, physical obstacles cleared, the journey down and back taking an experienced forager about forty minutes round trip.
In the aftermath of the monsoon, it was something else entirely.
Kael needed to get to the lower junction post — a staging point forty feet down the trunk where the colony's main food relay operated — to assess the trail infrastructure damage. He went alone. The bridge chain was occupied, the builder team committed to the northern quadrant. Going alone was not standard procedure for a trunk descent of this length.
He went anyway. The bark surface of the fig tree was ancient and deeply textured — channels and ridges created by decades of growth, irregular patches of smooth dead bark alternating with sections of living surface. In dry conditions, the texture provided excellent grip. After four hours of heavy rain, the smooth patches were nearly frictionless and even the ridged sections carried a thin moisture film that reduced grip significantly.
Kael moved slowly, testing each step before committing weight to it. Forty feet was a long way to fall. He was thirty feet down when he became aware of the jumping spider.
He was aware of it because he detected a slight vibration ahead of him on the bark surface — not the regular, directional pattern of an ant in known trail movement, but the irregular, low-amplitude vibration of a predator using vision-based navigation between still periods. Jumping spiders did not use vibration to navigate the way web spiders did.
But their body contact with the bark surface still transmitted faintly, and Kael's antennae were sensitive to that range.
He stopped. The spider was approximately fourteen body-lengths ahead of him, partially concealed in a bark channel. He could not see it — his position put it just out of his visual angle — but he could read its position from the vibration pattern with enough accuracy to know it was oriented toward him.
The jumping spider had compound eyes that gave it nearly three-hundred-and-sixty-degree vision, and its ability to track moving insects was among the best of any predator in the canopy layer. Two options: retreat up the trunk and find an alternative route, or stay still long enough for the spider to redirect its attention.
He stayed still. Staying still in current conditions carried its own risk — the moisture on the bark surface made prolonged grip-holding demanding — but retreating would require movement, and movement was exactly what the spider was watching for.
Four minutes. The spider's vibration pattern shifted, orienting slightly to the right. Then it moved — a series of rapid, light contact-vibrations heading perpendicular to the trunk, away from Kael's position, toward a cluster of fungus fruiting bodies on an adjacent branch stub.
Kael waited ninety more seconds and continued down. He found the mantis at the lower junction post itself.
A praying mantis — a young one, perhaps thirty body-lengths to Kael's one — was stationed on the bark surface directly adjacent to the junction post marker, its forearms folded in the ready-strike position, its large compound eyes oriented down-trail. It had been there long enough that several of the colony's arriving foragers had already been taken; Kael could see the partially processed remains of two workers at the mantis's feet.
A jumping spider could be waited out. A mantis that had found a productive hunting position would not move until either the prey stopped coming or something larger displaced it.
Kael backed up thirty feet and climbed laterally to a secondary bark channel running parallel to the main trail. He worked his way down to the junction post level using the secondary channel, arrived at the post from the lateral side where the mantis could not see him, and spent twelve minutes assessing the trail infrastructure damage before marking an alternate route through the lateral channel and climbing back up to report.
Two predators. One trail closure. One route rerouted.
He was back at the main pavilion in ninety minutes. Zara met him at the upper entry port and read his chemical report in the fast-scan antennal method used for urgent information transfer. Then she said: "There is a larger problem."
She sent him the signal. His antennae went still for a moment — the ant equivalent of a sharp intake of breath. From the south. A column of army ants. Ascending the main trunk.
