Army ants did not establish colonies in fixed locations the way weaver ants did. They were nomadic — a massive, moving superorganism of up to seven hundred thousand individuals, marching in columns that could be several inches wide and dozens of feet long, stripping every available food source from every surface they crossed before moving on.
The column ascending the fig tree's main trunk was a raiding party — a sub-unit of the larger army somewhere in the lower canopy, sent upward to assess and harvest whatever the elevated territory contained.
The colony scouts had detected them at the primary trunk chemical marker — a position seventy feet below the pavilion, where the colony maintained permanent boundary markers. Army ants did not read other colonies' chemical boundaries as stopping points. They read them as confirmation that there was something worth raiding above.
The leading edge of the column was moving at approximately eight inches per minute. At that rate, the leading ants would reach the colony branch junction in roughly forty-five minutes. Kael absorbed this and immediately began running the resource calculation.
The Emerald Canopy Colony had three hundred and eighteen adult workers. A significant portion were committed to the bridge chain, the nursery, and ongoing infrastructure repairs. The realistic number available for perimeter defense was around eighty — which sounded significant until you considered that army ant raiding columns routinely outnumbered their targets by ratios of twenty to one or higher.
Numerical defense against army ants was not viable. The only viable strategies were deterrence, obstruction, and controlled retreat. Zara already had the guard force reorganizing by the time Kael reached her. The major workers were being repositioned from interior stations to the junction point where the colony branch met the main trunk.
The foragers were being recalled from all active trail positions. The nurse workers were moving the queen and the larval population to the innermost chamber of the main pavilion, away from every external access point. Kael went to the colony's chemical stores.
Weaver ants did not use venom the way fire ants or many wasp species did. Their defensive chemistry relied on formic acid — produced in a specialized gland in the abdomen and sprayed or applied to surfaces through a precise abdominal tip maneuver.
In high enough concentrations, formic acid was a powerful deterrent to most insects, causing sensory disruption and surface irritation that made continued advance costly enough to force a tactical withdrawal.
The colony had formic acid reserves stored in wax-sealed chambers in the main pavilion's eastern quadrant — a supply that was replenished by the workers who produced it but could be depleted in a sustained defensive action. Kael calculated the supply against the estimated column size and the distance of the trunk junction below them.
"We cannot defend at the trunk junction," he told Zara. "The surface area is too wide and the column has too many flanking options. We need to defend at the branch entry point — the single-ant-width chokepoint where the branch meets the trunk."
The branch entry point was fifteen feet below the pavilion, where the colony's home branch narrowed to a bottleneck before connecting to the trunk. It was the narrowest point in the approach geometry — perhaps two ant-widths across at its most restricted section.
At that point, the numerical advantage of the army ants was negated by physics: two ant-widths was two ant-widths, regardless of how many ants were stacked behind the leading pair.
If they could hold the chokepoint, they could hold the colony. If the chokepoint failed, the colony had perhaps four minutes before the leading raiders reached the queen's chamber.
"Agreed," Zara said. "You manage the chemical relay. I manage the formation. We have thirty-eight minutes."
They moved. The next thirty-eight minutes inside the colony were the most concentrated period of simultaneous coordinated activity that Kael had seen in his two years as a builder. Every worker in the colony was in motion with a specific assignment, moving at the controlled urgency that was the ant equivalent of a run — not panic, but the maximum sustainable pace that experience and training allowed.
The guard major workers moved into position at the chokepoint approach in formation groups of four, coordinated by Zara's chemical signals. The nurse workers completed the queen relocation and sealed the inner chamber entry with a physical barrier of massed bodies — the particular defense formation where workers linked their bodies in an overlapping wall across a doorway, each one anchored to the next, presenting a mass that a raider would have to tear apart piece by piece.
The forager recall was still in progress — workers from the eastern and southern trails converging on the pavilion entry ports in a stream of incoming workers, each one being immediately redirected to a defensive assignment. No worker arrived and stood still. The colony did not have the resource margin for any worker to be unassigned.
Kael positioned himself at the chemical relay staging point — the junction between the storage chambers and the forward deployment workers — and began regulating the supply chain. The formic acid would need to be delivered in calibrated quantities: enough to maintain deterrent concentration at the deployment points, not so much that the reserves were depleted before the column's forward momentum was broken.
He ran the calculation one more time as he took his position. If the column held its current pace and the chokepoint defense deployed at full efficiency, they had approximately fourteen minutes of deterrent supply at maximum deployment rate before the reserves hit the critical threshold. Fourteen minutes was not a comfortable margin. But it was a margin.
"Column contact in eight minutes," Zara signaled from her position.
Kael confirmed the relay chain was set and sent back a single acknowledgment signal. Then he waited, counting the seconds, reading the vibrations from the trunk below through the branch surface beneath his feet.
