The crack in the intake cover was in the corner where the stone floor met the east wall of the mill, partly hidden by a cob of dried mud and a growth of green wall moss that Rowan had been using as a sleeping pad in warmer months. He knew the crack's exact dimensions: wide enough at the top for his head and shoulders, narrowing toward the bottom in a way that required him to angle his hips sideways and let his tail follow in a controlled curve behind.
He had used it precisely once before, and the experience had left a clear sensory memory: cold stone on all four paws, the smell of deep river damp, a sound like being inside a large, wet drum. The intake channel below was about two feet wide, floored with dressed stone, and roofed with the iron grating through which the river supply flowed down to the wheel.
The water level in the channel varied with the season. In October, with autumn rains driving the creek, it ran perhaps twenty-two inches deep. He sat at the edge of the crack for several minutes, reading the air.
The air coming up from below was cold, river-smelling, with a fine spray of mist on it. He could taste the iron of the grating and, beneath that, the older smell of dressed stone that had been wet for two hundred years. He couldn't smell the brass key yet, but he hadn't expected to. Brass was a quiet metal.
He would have to find it by touch and by memory of the geometry—where would a small, three-inch key go if it dropped from the chain above and fell four feet into a moving water channel? The current in the intake ran from east to west toward the wheel.
The key would have been deflected west, toward the sluice gate pallet, and then caught by the iron lip at the base of the gate if the gate was fully closed, which it was.
The western end of the channel, under the closed sluice gate. That was where he needed to go. Rowan took a breath, squeezed through the crack, and dropped.
The cold hit him immediately—not the sharp cold of open winter air, but the dense, enveloping cold of stone and moving water together, the kind that sank directly into his fur and didn't leave. The channel was precisely as he remembered: a narrow stone tube barely wide enough to move in comfortably, with the iron grating overhead cutting the grey light into thin slats and the rush of water filling his ears.
He was on a narrow stone ledge above the waterline—a two-inch lip at the channel wall that had existed last time and still existed, mercifully, at this side of the channel. The water ran fast and dark below his paws. He could feel its cold breath on his belly fur.
He was three feet into the intake channel, moving west along the two-inch ledge, when he first understood the full acoustic character of the space. Above ground, the mill's acoustic voice was complex but navigable—multiple vibration sources layered over each other, the building's stone shell acting as a resonator that blurred and softened the individual components into a coherent whole.
Down here, in the stone channel with its close walls and iron grating overhead, the acoustic environment was entirely different. Every sound had a sharp, wet clarity. He could hear the individual drips from the grating joints above him, each one a distinct percussive tap that told him about the spacing and condition of the iron bars.
He could hear the water flowing past the ledge—not as a generalised rush but as a texture of individual currents, the faster central flow and the slower water along the wall where the ledge existed. He could hear, faintly, the transmission of the surface wind through the stone above him, a sub-bass frequency that he felt in his ribs rather than heard with his ears.
He pressed himself against the east wall and began moving west, one cautious paw at a time, testing the ledge before each step. The width of his path was roughly three inches—tight enough that his whiskers brushed the stone roof above him if he lifted his head too high.
The smell of river intensified as he moved west toward the sluice gate, and the sound changed: the rushing of the open intake behind him gave way to the heavier, lower sound of water pressing against the closed gate pallet.
And then, as his left forepaw moved forward and met something on the ledge, he stopped. Not stone. Not moss. Something smooth and slightly resistant to the flow of the water, wedged into the angle between the ledge and the base of the sluice gate frame.
Rowan pressed his nose down to it and breathed in. Brass. Cold brass, river-washed, faintly green at the edges from the mineral content of the Millcreek water. Three inches long. Hexagonal head.
He had found it. Now came the harder problem: how to get it back up.
