Deep within the mossy oak rafters of the 200-year-old Millcreek Watermill, a quiet golden hazel dormouse named Rowan has spent three winters listening to the rhythmic thrum of the great wooden waterwheel. Known among the rafters for his uncanny sense of acoustic vibration and high-wire tail balance, Rowan lives peacefully alongside Eli, the millkeeper's twelve-year-old grandson.
But when an ancient brass iron-shod key drops into the mill's intake sluice—locking the heavy oak gears just three days before the annual autumn grain delivery—the mill master threatens to shut down the watermill forever and sell the land to a timber syndicate.
From the high rafters to the churning splash-box below, Rowan must navigate the dangerous inner clockwork of the watermill to clear the jam and retrieve the key before the timber gears break under the river's pressure.
